The Colour Wheel

Hue : The Name of the colour
Value : Lightness or darkness of the colour - the amount of grey or white
Intensity : (Chroma) Relationship between The Hue and The Value - Hi Intesity is full 100% Hue with no grey value.  Lower intensities are percentages of hue and value (grey).

Colour Schemes

Complimentary: 

Colours that are directly across from one another on the colour wheel.


Pick a value range within one hue and add a complimentary highlight colour

Monochromatic: 

Colours that are of the same hue with varying values
(amounts of grey).


Pick a value range within one hue - Add a monochromatic highlight colour of full intensity.


Analogous:

Colours that are closely related (neighbours) on the colour wheel.
