TRACING INTERNET ROUTES

Type the domain name of an e-mail or Web server in the box below and click on Perform Trace. For example, try www.netscape.com.

The Traceroute facility is like a personalized traffic report showing you the route your data takes to get between EntreNet and a remote server, and the bottlenecks and hazards along the way as your data passes from router to router. These routers are owned by different Internet Service Providers.

Traceroute makes three measurements of the number of milliseconds (ms) it takes to get to each hop along the route, and where possible, displays the domain name of the router. Although the names are cryptic, you can often determine which city the router is located in and the ISP who operates it such as UUNET, ALTERNET, PSINET, etc.

One or two asterisks (*) in the timing columns indicate errors and lost packets. If the traceroute continues to print multiple lines of three asterisks (* * *) then it indicates that you have either found a blockage in the Internet backbone where the connection is temporarily down, or you are being blocked by a 'firewall' on the remote network which prevents you from testing beyond that point.
